Why pickleball is filling every indoor facility, and how to keep up

Pickleball has been the fastest-growing sport in the United States for several years running, and the growth has a seasonal problem. Outdoor courts empty out from November to March across most of the country, and every one of those players goes looking for a gym with a net. Facilities that had never heard of the sport in 2020 now have waiting lists for Tuesday night court time.

Why it fits indoor venues so well

  • A basketball court holds four pickleball courts. One hour of gym time becomes four bookings. Temporary lines and portable nets take fifteen minutes to set up.
  • Players book in groups of four. Doubles is the default format, so every booking comes with a built-in team and a split bill.
  • Demand is steady, not spiky. Pickleball players play two to four times a week and favor morning and early-evening slots that other sports leave empty.
  • The audience skews older and pays reliably. Average players are in their 30s to 60s, book ahead, and rarely no-show once they have prepaid.

What players want from a venue

Three things decide whether a pickleball group becomes a regular: a way to see open slots without calling, a recurring booking so the same four people get the same court every week, and a fair cancellation policy. Groups that find all three stay for years.

What venues should do this winter

  • Mark pickleball as its own sport with its own pricing, usually $20 to $45 per court per hour indoors.
  • Open 6 AM to 9 AM weekday slots. Retirees and remote workers fill them.
  • Offer a weekly recurring option with a small discount. Predictable revenue beats premium pricing on empty courts.
  • Rent paddles. A $5 rental pays for the paddle in three uses and lowers the barrier for first-timers.
In the Teamzic Venue app, pickleball courts can be laid over a basketball floor as four separate bookable units with their own schedule, so a gym can sell the full court at 7 PM and four pickleball courts at 8 PM without touching a spreadsheet.
